SPRINGFIELD — It has been a while since the Hoosac Valley girls basketball team hadn't been seeded No. 1 or 2 in the Western Massachusetts tournament.
But when tournament director Lou Conte announced that coach Ron Wojcik's Hurricanes were the No. 3 seed in the 12-team Division III field, the veteran Hoosac coach said he wasn't surprised.
"What really hurt us was the fact that a lot of the D-IIs that we beat that were all tournament teams last year, didn't make the tournament this year," Wojcik said. "Auburn, Marlborough and Longmeadow were all in the tourney last year. None of them made the tourney this year.
"You set your schedule up based on that, but you can't control that."
Hoosac is one of four Berkshire County teams to earn spots in the Division III tournament. Wahconah picked up the sixth seed, Monument Mountain the seventh and Drury the 12th. Division III has the largest contingent of Berkshire County teams in it.
