The Boston Celtics and the Massachusetts State Lottery honored Hoosac Valley senior Alie Mendel over the weekend as the Hero Among Us during Game 1 of the Celtics playoff series with the Indiana Pacers.

Mendel has spent the past year battling thyroid cancer while continuing to serve as one of the best athletes in Berkshire County. Mendel helped to lead the Hurricanes to their first ever girls basketball state championship back in March.

The Boston Celtics began the Heroes Among Us program in 1997, using it as a platform to recognize individuals who have made an impact on their community. The honor is presented at every home game.
