Kolodkin's Corner: 3 county teams have chances at league titles as the regular season closes
2/6/2026by Jesse Kolodkin-The Berkshire Eagle

The regular season is coming to a close and don't look know, but the PVIAC Western Massachusetts playoffs begin next week. With that, several Berkshire County teams have already, or have a chance at claiming league crowns on both the hardwood and ice. That includes a crazy finish to the first season of the Berkshire League.

Ice Hockey

McCann Tech has had a stellar regular season, with an 11-3 record and an 8-0 mark in the Wright League. By beating Agawam 7-5 on Wednesday, the Hornets locked up their first league crown since the North County co-op moved from Drury, down the hill to McCann.

The Hornets are also on the cusp of securing a home playoff game in the MIAA Division IV State Tournament, which would be a first for a county team. Taconic has three games left and while it has secured itself a bid to the Western Mass. Tournament, the Hornets are on the bubble for the state tournament.

McCann Tech visits Taconic Saturday night at the Boys and Girls Club of the Berkshires.

Boys Basketball

For those who remember the battles between Wahconah and Saint Joe's and Drury and Hoosac Valley in the old Berkshire North, this year's close to the "inaugural" Berkshire League season has been wild. Wahconah held the lead with a 6-1 league record while Drury was 6-2 and Pittsfield was 5-2.

Boys Basketball Standings

Berkshire League Overall League Bi-County West Overall League Tri-County North Overall League
Drury 14-2 7-2 Mount Everett* 14-2 9-0 McCann Tech 9-5 9-2
Pittsfield 10-5 7-2 Libertas 10-6 5-3 Pioneer Valley Chinese 12-4 10-3
Wahconah 12-4 6-3 Lee 8-9 5-4 Smith Voc. 8-7 7-4
Monument 9-7 2-7 Veritas 6-10 3-6 Franklin Tech. 7-9 6-6

Taconic 4-12 3-6 Mount Greylock 5-12 2-7 Turners Falls 5-12 3-8
* = League Champ           Mohawk Trail 1-16 1-10

But the Warriors drew a short straw, playing three games in four days and that included games against PHS and Drury. Wahconah lost both, the latter a nail-biter to Drury where a last shot was off at the final buzzer. That moved Wahconah to 6-3 and essentially out of the league title race and left just two.

PHS and Drury are both 7-2 in league play but the Generals swept the Blue Devils in the season series. All Pittsfield has to do today is beat Taconic in the War on the Floor and the Generals claim a Berkshire League title. Drury plays today as well and also faces its archrival with a trip to Hoosac. Only if PHS loses AND Drury wins, the Blue Devils can claim the league crown. That being said, even if PHS wins, it's hard to imagine Drury sleepwalking through a chance at sweeping its rival.

While the Berkshire League has its particulars to iron out, Mount Everett made some history last Friday with a 65-56 win over Libertas Academy in Springfield. That win cemented a Bi-County West League title for the Eagles and gave them their first league championship since 1962. Well before anyone on the team was close to being born.

Just as impressive as Everett's 14-2 record, 9-0 in league, is that the Eagles grabbed the crown with one more league game left. A game today when Mount Greylock comes to visit would be icing on the cake of a perfect, 10-0 league season.

Finally, McCann Tech is the lone county crew in the Tri-County North but the Hornets have a chance to lock down the league with a win today at Mohawk Trail. The Hornets won the first game, 42-22, but this will be their second game in as many days and third game this week after losing on Monday to Greylock and playing Everett on Thursday. Still, if McCann avoids the trap game, Mohawk is 1-16, the Hornets will be able to claim a Tri-County Crown.

In other boys basketball news, Drury's Jorge Bond is still lighting up the scoreboard. If averaging 27.9 points per game wasn't enough, the junior has been even hotter as of late. He's averaging 30.5 points through the last six games, in four of them he dropped 30 points including three straight. He's also third in the county — boys or girls — with 53 made 3-pointers, that's 3.3 made triples a game.

With 1,283 career points, he is 26th in Berkshire County boys history. With 20 points against Hoosac tonight, he'd move into the top 25.

Bond and McLaughlin

Drury's Jorge Bond gets into the lane and meets Wahconah's Sam McLaughlin defending the rim.

JESSE KOLODKIN — THE BERKSHIRE EAGLE

Adan Wicks just crossed the 1,000-point marker for Hoosac on Wednesday and currently has 1,018 points with both the Western Mass. and state tournaments left. He's averaging 20.3 points per game and is tops on the boys side with 54 made treys so far this season. He's joined on the list by Qwanell Bradley, who is 10th in the county and averages 14.3 points per game.

Lee's Joey Abderhalden was feeling extra defensive attention and his production dipped slightly, as he scored in the teens for five straight games. That lowered his overall average to 19.6 points per contest, still third best in the county. The senior has been back at it in the last two games, however, putting up 20 against Greylock and 23 against Hoosac. He's also fifth with 39 made 3-pointers.

Adan Wicks pull-up

Hoosac Valley's Adan Wicks hits a pull-up floater over Pittsfield's Noah Kane-Smalls.

JESSE KOLODKIN — THE BERKSHIRE EAGLE

PHS' Bri'Awn Thompson is fourth with 17.9 points per game and 10th with 30 made treys. Thompson forms a dangerous inside-outside attack with big man Quincy Abellie, who is eighth on the list with 15.3 points per game. Another big game from the duo today could give the Generals a season sweep of Taconic for the first time in over a decade and bring a league title to East Street.

Wahconah's Cooper Calvert is fifth with 17.1 points per game. Calvert is the Warriors' hired gun on the outside, third on the boys side with 47 3-balls so far this season. Taconic's Quincy King is sixth with 16.9 points per game while Everett's Darius Taliaferro is seventh. Taliaferro isn't too shabby as a 3-point shooter, having knocked down 31 3s.

But the lightning-quick guard is a master of the transition game and getting to the rim. He's had plenty of help of late as teammate and center Brady Carpenter set a personal-best with 29 points in a win over Libertas Academy that gave Everett the league title. After scoring 13 points against Hampden Charter, Carpenter exploded for 35 points, a new career high, in a win over McCann. He's now averaging 13.2 points per game.

McCann's Zach Howland is ninth with 14.5 points per game.

Madison McCarthy 3-pointer

Wahconah's Madison McCarthy puts up a 3-pointer, a shot that gave the seniors her 1,000th career point.

Girls Basketball

The Franklin North League went under major renovations this year but in its first year in the league, Lee has already grabbed a league title and polished off an unblemished 10-0 league record. The Wildcats are 14-3 and coming off a statement win over Hoosac on Wednesday, they have just one more game left against Monson.

The McCann girls are in a similar position to their boys, within striking distance of a league title, but a strong close is needed. The Hornets are 13-2 with a 12-1 record in the Tri-County South. But, St. Mary's (Westfield) is 13-3 and 11-2 in the league and both teams have one league game left.

McCann beat Gateway on Thursday and is at Commerce (7-8, 6-5) on Monday. Meanwhile, St. Mary's won at Westfield Tech on Thursday and is at Pioneer Valley Chinese (0-10, 0-9) on Monday. McCann has guaranteed itself at least a share of the Tri-County South, but if McCann beats Commerce, the Hornets win the league outright.

If McCann can regain its balance, the Hornets need only win one more game to lock up at least a share of the league title. If the Hornets win out, the Tri-County South's home is the Hive.

The Suburban League had a chance at late chaos, then Frontier reminded its league-mates why the Red Hawks are the top seed in the MIAA Division IV Power Rankings. Back-to-back double-digit wins over Wahconah and Pope Francis have guaranteed Frontier a Suburban title in its first year in the league.

If Frontier had lost one of those games and Drury beats Frontier in the finale, the Blue Devils could have claimed a share of the league. Alas, Frontier is 9-0 in league play and Drury is 7-2. Both teams have one more league game, against each other, on Monday at Frontier. The first game was a close, 43-34 Frontier win. The Blue Devils are the top seed in the D-V rankings, so a win by Drury would show the state that the Blue Devils can punch up with the best of them.

Giana Carlino drives

Lee's Giana Carlino had 16 points in Wednesday's home win over Hoosac Valley.

MIKE WALSH — THE BERKSHIRE EAGLE

In the gantlet that is the Valley League, Pittsfield had little room for error. The Generals made a few mistakes and that cost them a shot at the league title, which was happily claimed by Springfield Central. The Golden Eagles went 9-1 in league play while PHS is 5-4 with one more game left against Longmeadow. They were supposed to play last week, but the game was postponed due to the snowstorm. The makeup is Monday at Longmeadow.

Wahconah's Madison McCarthy and Lee's Giana Carlino are tied with 17.5 points per game to lead the girls side in scoring. McCarthy leads the entire county with a monstrous 58 made 3-pointers, almost double the next-best shooter on the girls' side. That would be Hoosac's Regan Shea who has hit an impressive 34 3-pointers. Shea is fifth with 13.6 points per game, just ahead of Pittsfield's Harolyn Castillo who averages 13.3.

McCarthy and Castillo both crossed into four digits this season and Castillo just passed a former PHS teammate, Jamie Duquette, for 59th place on the all-time Berkshire County girls scoring list. With 1,028 points, Castillo is a single point from passing yet another General, Bella Aitken (2018). McCarthy has 1,102 points and is 46th on the list but should not need much time to move up a spot and pass Mount Everett grad Allison Rote (2005), who finished her career with 1,104 points.

Caprese Conyers pass

Pittsfield's Caprese Conyers looks to pass out of a trap.

JESSE KOLODKIN — THE BERKSHIRE EAGLE

Carlino has paced Lee to its league crown and while Carlino is a guard that can drive, teammate Mika Diller does the heavy lifting on the block, averaging 10.1 points per game and grabbing no shortage of rebounds. Those two had to do all they could to stop Greylock's Tanley Drake — and Drake still scored 29 points in the two games against Lee — as Drake is the fourth leading scorer with 16.1 points per game and fifth with 23 made 3s.

Third on the list and a teammate of Castillo's is Caprese Conyers, who just dropped a career-best 28 points on Wahconah on Wednesday. The sophomore is averaging 17.3 points per game and has scored in double figures in every game this season.
